Bachelor of Arts in Biblical Studies

The Biblical Studies major is the Bible component of every major program at mount SianiCollege. The Bachelor of Biblical Studies degree is an integrated and systematic program of biblical study, giving students a foundational knowledge of the major disciplines of biblical exegesis, biblical languages and Jewish culture. Once those foundations have been laid, it provides advanced level studies in bible or theology. This degree prepares people bible teaching and leadership in a pastoral or cross-cultural ministry context.

Students are taught by research-active scholars, are expected to undertake a diverse range of learning tasks and are challenged to develop their intellectual independence. Graduates of the programme are well-informed, versatile, independent thinkers with the information literacy, communication, research and interpersonal skills necessary for a career or further academic study. The completed BA is an entry qualification for the PGDipArts in the major subject of the degree.

Distinctives of MSC ’s Biblical Studies degree

  • Approach to Scripture. MSC ’s approach to the Scripture is both scholarly and believing: We seek to study the Bible with the best of available scholarly tools, open to questions and to critical analysis. At the same time, we believe that the Bible is God’s word, and seek to approach that word reverently and to acknowledge its claim on our lives.

  • Direct encounter with the biblical texts. While our courses make use of important current scholarship concerning the biblical text, the biblical text itself serves as the main resource for engaging students with the message and meaning of Scripture. This hands-on approach to biblical materials will prepare the student for a lifetime of personal study and growth.

  • The scope of the biblical core. MSC's biblical core of courses grounds every student in six of the most crucial types of literature in the Bible: historical narrative (the Torah), synoptic gospels, the writings of Matthew, and the letters of Paul. Electives and further courses in the major explore other types, such as apocalyptic and wisdom literature.

  • Capstone courses. Three capstone courses assist students in integrating the disciplines of biblical study and biblical theology into an approach to life that holds God’s word and God’s world together in creative tension and harmony.
